It uses alcohol which can be very drying for your skin. Also, when it says that it inhibits sebum production we are curious to know how they think it can do that. It would need to be an oral acne medication in order for it to successfully inhibit sebum production.
Basically the way it is going to work is by drying your skin and causing it to peel so that you can reveal healthier and newer cells. It also helps to close pores which can prevent new bacteria from getting in and can keep skin healthier.
Active Ingredients
Skin Medica uses a combination of two different ingredients. The wash uses salicylic acid. It actually uses salicylic acid in a 2% strength which is fairly strong. It is a beta hydroxy acid which can cause the cells to shed more rapidly thus increasing cell turnover. By increasing cell turnover you increase the likelihood that bacteria can develop and accumulate.
Benzoyl peroxide is the main ingredient of the lotion. They say that you can use a moisturizer if you need to and you most likely will need to. That’s because benzoyl peroxide (which is an effective acne treatment product) commonly causes dry skin and flakiness.
Is Skin Medica Worth Trying?
This product is really no different than most of the other acne treatment systems on the market. The biggest difference is probably that it is a lot more expensive than the other systems. It is about $100 for a month of treatment as opposed to other products that are only $20 a month. Especially due to the price we probably wouldn’t recommend using it because you could find any other mediocre product for significantly less money.
